SmartMeasurement’s ALSONIC-SAVM system is an area-velocity meter that is used in conjunction with a user-supplied level transmitter to measure flow rates in partially filled sewer pipes. The ALSONIC-SAVM consists of an advanced DSP-based flow computer, a cylindrical expanding scissors ring with an integral transducer array, and a user-supplied level transmitter. It uses the transit time difference of ultrasonic sound pulses measuring the average velocity within the depth of sewer pipe, a level transmitter along with a flow computer to perform Area Velocity Measurement (AVM). The ultrasonic pulses are transmitted upstream and downstream across the channel at an angle α between the flow direction and the sonic wave path, with the difference in the sonic wave’s transit time being directly proportional to the liquid velocity.
The ALSONIC-SAVM’s transducer array fits snugly inside a round partially filled sewer pipe. The user-supplied level transmitter is typically installed at the 12 o’clock position. It is designed not to be affected by sedimentation and has the ability to measure backflow and provide an alarm should excess sand or sediment be deposited at the bottom of the pipe. The transducers create almost no restriction, so virtually no head loss is created. A sedimentation warning is given only when sand is deposited in the pipeline, so on-site inspection and cleaning is only necessary in the event of a warning. This eliminates the need for periodic inspection, thereby reducing maintenance. Unlike other Sewer flow monitors, the ALSONIC-SAVM has the ability to measure fluids ranging from very clean to extremely dirty up to 30% TSS or w/ entrained air/bubbles and the ability to measure low flows over a > 1000:1 turndown.

Transit-Time Solutions for Cylindrical Channels: ALSONIC-SAVM
SmartMeasurement offers the ALSONIC-SAVM, a variant of the ALSONIC-AVM, specifically designed for cylindrical conduits like those in sewer systems. This model excels in profiling velocities in small channels, even with limited straight runs, making it ideal for sewer applications.
Design and Functionality
The ALSONIC-SAVM is tailored for open channel pipes or conduits ranging from of 6-32 inches (150-800mm), for larger sizes please contact the factory. It features the same display module as the ALSONIC-AVM but is equipped with a pre-configured cylindrical 4-path transducer array, ensuring easy installation. This array calculates flow velocity with the same high accuracy as the standard ALSONIC-AVM.
Efficient and Accurate
Designed for adaptability and precision, the ALSONIC-SAVM is an optimal solution for measuring flow in partially filled sewer pipes, offering the reliability and accuracy synonymous with SmartMeasurement’s ultrasonic technology.
